Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cream soda expire?
Unopened bottles or cans of cream soda typically last about 6-9 months past the date printed on the packaging when stored at room temperature. Once opened, cream soda should be consumed within two days. If you've poured it into a glass but couldn't finish it, refrigerate it ASAP and try to drink within a day, though it likely won't be as fizzy. Sealed homemade cream soda can last up to two weeks in the fridge.
How do you tell if cream soda is bad?
It can be tricky to tell if cream soda has gone bad as it doesn't mold or change much in color. The best indicators are a change in the smell, lack of carbonation, and off flavor. If it smells stale, odd, or lacks its usual sweet aroma, it's probably gone bad. If you open the container and there are no bubbles or its fizz is significantly less than usual, the soda has likely gone flat and won't taste good. Any change in taste (like traits of sourness or bitterness) is a sign it’s time to toss the drink.
Tips for storing cream soda to extend shelf life
• Store unopened cans or bottles of cream soda in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. The pantry or a kitchen cupboard is perfect.
• Once opened, it's best to consume the soda as soon as possible for optimal taste and fizz, but if need be, store it in the fridge with a sealed cap.
• Avoid moving your cream soda from cold to warm and then back again too often as temperature fluctuations can accelerate its degradation.
• If making homemade cream soda, store it in a clean, air-tight container in the fridge. Clear, glass containers are fantastic as they allow you to keep an eye on your concoction.
• Never store cream soda, or any kind of soda, in the freezer as the liquid may expand and cause the can or bottle to explode.
