Expiration & Storage Tips
When does maple extract expire?
Unopened, maple extract can last for several years and can be used well past its printed expiry date if it has been stored properly. Once opened, the extract typically remains good for about 4 years. If you freeze your maple extract, it may extend the shelf life slightly, although its high alcohol content makes it unlikely to freeze solidly.
How do you tell if maple extract is bad?
If your maple extract has gone bad, you'll likely notice a few signs. The smell and taste may be off, stale or missing, indicating that the extract's natural flavors have deteriorated. Additionally, if your bottle of extract has a milky appearance or if anything looks like it's growing in the bottle, it's best to play it safe and toss it.
Tips for storing maple extract to extend shelf life
• Keep your maple extract in a cool, dark place away from the stove and other heat sources.
• Make sure to tightly seal the cap after every use to keep air out and flavor in.
• If you've bought the extract in bulk, consider decanting it into smaller bottles. This way you can open and use one at a time, and keep the rest sealed and fresh.
• While freezing is an option, remember the extract may not freeze solid due to its alcohol content and it's not necessary. Room temperature storage in a proper location is usually sufficient for a long shelf life.
