Expiration & Storage Tips
When does curry powder expire?
Unopened curry powder usually has a shelf life of about 3 to 4 years, which means it can stay good past the printed expiration date if properly stored. Once opened, curry powder is best used within 1 to 2 years to ensure its peak flavor. Despite these timelines, it's pretty rare for curry powder to spoil in a way that makes it unsafe to eat. However, it loses its potency and flavor over time and might not give your dish the flavor you expect.
How do you tell if curry powder is bad?
Determine if your curry powder has lost its 'oomph' by taking a whiff. Fresh curry powder will have a strong, pungent aroma due to the mix of various spices. If it doesn't smell as vibrant as it once did or has lost its scent entirely, it's time to replace your stash. Additionally, while unlikely, if you notice any signs of mold or bugs in your curry powder, discard it immediately.
Tips for storing curry powder to extend shelf life
• Keep curry powder in a cool, dry place away from heat and light, such as a closed cabinet away from the stove. Heat, light, and moisture can degrade the flavor and aromatic properties of the spice.
• Store curry powder in an airtight container to prolong its shelf life. Spices can absorb odors of other food items around them, so an airtight container will also protect it from unwanted scents.
• Avoid using a wet spoon to scoop out your curry powder as it can introduce moisture into the container which can accelerate degradation and potentially invite bacteria, mold or bugs.
• Consider labeling your curry powder with the date of purchase. This helps monitor its age and freshness.
• Consider buying in small quantities. Even though buying in bulk may seem like a better deal, it’s better to buy smaller amounts that you'll use up in a year or two to ensure peak flavor.
