Expiration & Storage Tips
When does mini chocolate chips expire?
Mini chocolate chips, like their bigger counterparts, have a long shelf-life. When unopened and kept in a cool, dry place, they can easily last from 2 to 3 years. Once opened, however, their quality may start to decline. If stored properly in a tightly sealed container, they can stay good for up to 1 year. If you have a bunch leftover and decide to freeze them, they can last for another year though the texture might change slightly.
How do you tell if mini chocolate chips is bad?
Mini chocolate chips are pretty easy to discern if they've spoiled. The most obvious sign is a whitish, bit chalky coating, known as the 'bloom'. This doesn't mean they're harmful to eat but the taste and texture might be off. Another sign to look for is a rancid smell. Remember that if unsure, it's always safer to replace them than to risk consuming spoiled food.
Tips for storing mini chocolate chips to extend shelf life
• Store your mini chocolate chips in a cool, dry and dark place. Exposure to sunlight or heat can result in the bloom.
• Once the package is opened, it's best to transfer the remaining chips to an airtight container or sealable plastic bag to keep out moisture and other contaminants.
• If putting them in the refrigerator, make sure to keep them in an airtight container to prevent them from absorbing smells of other foods. Let them come to room temperature before using to prevent any moisture from condensing on the chips.
• If you decide to freeze them, you can do so in their original package or in an airtight container. Thaw them at room temperature inside the container before using.
