Expiration & Storage Tips
When does m&m candy expire?
Typically, unopened packets of M&M's have an expiry date printed on the package, which would usually be about a year from the production date. Once you have opened the packet, they can last for about 2-3 months if stored properly. It's not common to store M&M's in the freezer, but if you do, they could last for over a year.
How do you tell if m&m candy is bad?
M&M's candy may have gone bad if the candy shell has noticeable discoloration or dullness in color. Chocolates tend to 'bloom' when exposed to varying temperatures; this would look like white or greyish streaks or spots on the candy. It's not harmful, just unsightly and it might taste a bit off. Also, the texture can change - they might become hard and lose their original creamy taste. A stale, off smell can also suggest that the candies have spoiled.
Tips for storing m&m candy to extend shelf life
• Always keep M&M's in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. High temperatures might cause them to melt together.
• Once opened, reseal the packet tightly or transfer to an airtight container to prevent exposure to air and humidity.
• If you live in a hot climate or if you want to keep the M&M's for a longer time, you can store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container. But remember to let them return to room temperature before eating so they regain their correct texture.
• Avoid storing with strong-smelling food items as chocolate can absorb other odors.
