Expiration & Storage Tips
When does potato chips expire?
Potato chips usually come with a 'Best Before' date printed on the packaging and they tend to stay fresh a few weeks past that date. An unopened bag can be expected to last 2-3 months if stored correctly. However, once opened, chips quickly start to go stale if not consumed within 1-2 weeks.
For homemade potato chips, they’re best when eaten right away, but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days. If you choose to freeze your potato chips, they can last up to 3 months, but their taste and texture may change once thawed. To restore their crispiness, you may need to pop them in the oven for a few minutes.
If consuming past the marked date, use sensory evaluation such as sight, smell and taste to ensure the product is still good.
How do you tell if potato chips is bad?
Stale potato chips are the easiest to identify. They will have lost their crispness and crunchiness, and instead be limp or tough to chew. The color may also appear darker, indicating overexposure to air.
Also pay attention to the smell. Chips that have gone bad often have an off odor. If they smell different than usual, it’s best to err on the side of caution and not eat them. Most importantly, if you see mold or any strange discoloration on the chips, discard them immediately as this is a clear sign of spoilage.
The last trick is to give it a taste. Small taste, that is. Does it taste odd or different than usual? If yes, it’s better to play safe and toss them out.
Tips for storing potato chips to extend shelf life
• Store the chips in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. This helps prevent the chips from going stale and losing flavor.
• Once the bag is opened, make sure to fold the bag down tightly or use a clip to secure it. Better still, transfer the remaining chips into an airtight container. This helps prevent air from getting to the chips which can make them stale.
• If you buy in bulk or have too many to finish at once, consider storing the extra bags in the freezer. This will extend their shelf life a bit, although the texture might change after defrosting.
• Want to freshen up slightly stale chips? Try popping them in the oven for a few minutes to help restore their crunchiness.
