Expiration & Storage Tips
When does green cabbage expire?
Unopened green cabbage, when stored in the refrigerator, lasts for around 2 weeks. However, once you cut the green cabbage, it needs to be consumed within 3-5 days for optimum freshness. If you've cooked the cabbage, try to finish it off within 3-4 days when refrigerated. Green cabbage can also be frozen. Just blanch it first, then freeze. When properly stored, it will maintain optimum quality for about 12-14 months but will remain safe to eat beyond that time.
How do you tell if green cabbage is bad?
Bad green cabbage often shows several tell-tale signs. Look for brown or black spots, which could suggest a bacterial or fungal infection. The leaves of bad green cabbage may also appear limp and lose their crisp texture. A sharp, unpleasant, sulfur-like odor is also a clear indication that your green cabbage has spoiled and should be discarded immediately.
Tips for storing green cabbage to extend shelf life
• Always store green cabbage in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for longer.
• Don't wash the cabbage until you're ready to use it. Moisture can lead to quicker spoilage.
• If you've cut the cabbage, wrap the remaining part tightly in plastic wrap to protect it from air exposure.
• Rotate your cabbage supply. Use the oldest ones first to avoid waste.
• To freeze, blanch the cabbage by boiling it for two minutes and then cooling it quickly in ice water. This kills bacteria and slows down the enzymes that cause it to spoil.
• Once blanched, pack the cabbage in airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags before putting them in the freezer.
