Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cream style corn expire?
An unopened can of cream style corn can last for 2-5 years past the printed date on the package. Once opened, you can keep it refrigerated in a covered container for 3-4 days. It can also be frozen for up to a month. Homemade cream style corn will last 4-5 days in the refrigerator and can also be frozen for up to 6 months.
How do you tell if cream style corn is bad?
Smell is your best indicator of whether cream style corn has gone bad. Spoiled cream style corn will have an off smell that is noticeably different from its sweet, fresh scent. You might also notice a change in color, from bright yellow to a dull, darker shade. If there appears to be mold or a slimy texture, discard the can immediately. When in doubt, always throw it out.
Tips for storing cream style corn to extend shelf life
• Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from extreme temperatures.
• Once opened, transfer the leftovers into a covered container before placing in the refrigerator.
• For longer storage, portion the corn into freezer-safe bags or containers, label with the date, and store in the freezer.
• To defrost frozen cream style corn, transfer it to the fridge 24 hours before you plan to use it. Avoid defrosting at room temperature to prevent the growth of bacteria.
• Use a clean spoon every time you scoop out cream style corn to avoid introducing bacteria into the can or container.
