Expiration & Storage Tips
When does udon noodle expire?
Unopened dried udon noodles can typically last for about 2-3 years if kept in a cool, dark place such as a pantry, provided that the package is not damaged. This far outlasts the printed expiration date on the package, which is typically about 1 year. Once opened, they should be used within 1-2 weeks for the best taste and quality. Fresh udon noodles, on the other hand, come with a use-by date on the package which is usually within 2 weeks from the manufacturing date. Once opened, fresh udon noodles should be consumed as soon as possible, ideally within 2-3 days. Freezing is an option for fresh noodles which extends the life for up to 2 months. If frozen, let them defrost in the refrigerator before using.
How do you tell if udon noodle is bad?
For dried udon noodles, look for changes in color, texture, and smell. If they have become discolored, excessively hard, or if they've developed an off smell, discard them. For fresh udon noodles, signs of spoilage include a sour smell, slimy texture, or mold growth. If there’s any change in color to a dark or gray hue, it’s safe to say they've gone bad.
Tips for storing udon noodle to extend shelf life
• For dried udon noodles, keep the package sealed until ready to use and afterwards store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to maximize its shelf life.
• Fresh udon noodles should be refrigerated as soon as possible after purchase. After opening the package, place any unused portions in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out.
• Leftover cooked udon should be stored in a airtight container in the refrigerator and consumed within 4-5 days. Avoid leaving the cooked noodles at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
• Freezing uncooked fresh udon noodles can help extend their life. To freeze, simply place the noodles in a freezer-safe bag or container. Remember to leave room for expansion as the noodles will expand slightly when frozen. Thaw frozen udon noodles in the refrigerator before use.
