Expiration & Storage Tips
When does tomato sauce expire?
Unopened canned or jarred tomato sauce usually lasts about 12 to 18 months past the printed date on the packaging in a cool, dark place like a pantry. Once opened, tomato sauce should be used within 5 to 7 days if stored in the refrigerator. Homemade tomato sauce typically lasts about 5 days in the fridge. You can freeze both store-bought and homemade tomato sauce; it should last up to 4-6 months in the freezer.
How do you tell if tomato sauce is bad?
Spotting bad tomato sauce is pretty straightforward. If you see any mold, it’s a clear indicator that it has spoiled. In addition, if it's leaking, has bulges, or the can or jar has gotten rusted, it's better not to consume it. Smell and taste are also dead giveaways. If the tomato sauce starts smelling sour or off, then it’s likely gone bad. Similarly, if the taste is notably sour or bitter, it’s time to chuck it.
Tips for storing tomato sauce to extend shelf life
• Keep unopened cans or jars in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and light.
• Once opened, seal the can or jar tightly and refrigerate. Use up opened sauce within a week if possible.
• To freeze, pour leftover sauce into freezer-safe containers or bags. Leave some space at the top of the containers to allow the sauce to expand as it freezes.
• To thaw frozen sauce, leave it in the fridge overnight. If in a rush, you can defrost it in a saucepan over low heat.
• Remember, always use a clean spoon to scoop out sauce.
