Expiration & Storage Tips
When does diced tomato expire?
Freshly diced tomatoes will last for 5-7 days in the refrigerator. If you also have diced tomatoes in a can, these will last between 12-18 months if you keep them unopened in a cool and dry place. Once the canned tomatoes are opened, they should be used within a week. If you happen to freeze your diced tomatoes, they will keep for around 2 months for optimal flavor, although they will technically be safe to consume beyond that point.
How do you tell if diced tomato is bad?
It's pretty simple to determine if your diced tomatoes have spoiled. Fresh diced tomatoes that have gone bad will have a slimy texture and often develop black or dark spots. You may also notice a strange off-odor. Similarly, canned diced tomatoes should be inspected for signs of spoilage. If the tomatoes have been in the fridge for over a week, they're probably going bad. When it comes to canned diced tomatoes, never consume them if the can appears bloated or if the tomatoes smell sour or have a fizzy texture upon opening.
Tips for storing diced tomato to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate fresh diced tomatoes in a sealable bag or container.
• Ensure the container is airtight to avoid the tomatoes absorbing the smells of other foods in your fridge. Glass containers work best for this.
• If you have left over canned diced tomatoes, transfer them from the opened can to a plastic or glass container before refrigerating. This avoids any tinny taste that can come from storing food in an open tin can.
• Freshly diced tomatoes can be frozen for longer storage. To do this, spread your tomatoes out on a baking sheet in a single layer, freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. This prevents the tomatoes from sticking together.
