Expiration & Storage Tips
When does ricotta cheese expire?
Unopened, ricotta cheese will usually last about two weeks beyond the date printed on the package. However, if it's opened and stored well in the refrigerator it will be safe and should retain optimal quality for about 5 to 7 days. Once it has been frozen and thawed, it will last for an additional 3-4 days in the fridge. Ricotta cheese typically does not suit as well to freezing because it can cause changes in the texture, hence not generally recommended.
How do you tell if ricotta cheese is bad?
The signs that ricotta cheese has gone bad can be quite noticeable. It will usually develop a sour smell, become yellowish, and might have mold. If your cheese looks like this, do not taste it to see if it's good; it's better to err on the side of caution and throw it away.
Tips for storing ricotta cheese to extend shelf life
• Make sure to store the ricotta cheese in the refrigerator at 40°F or below in a dry, airtight container to keep it fresh for longer.
• If it comes in a tub, make sure you replace the lid tightly after each use.
• Try to avoid getting any liquid or other food substances in the cheese as this can lead to early spoilage.
• Do not freeze ricotta cheese if you can avoid it, as freezing and thawing the cheese can lead to changes in texture and impaired flavor.
