Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cream of mushroom expire?
Unopened canned cream of mushroom can typically last for a year or more past its printed date when properly stored in a cool, dark pantry. However, once you crack open the can, the soup lasts only for about 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Homemade cream of mushroom might only last upto 3 days in the fridge. If it's frozen, cream of mushroom can last for up to 4-6 months.
How do you tell if cream of mushroom is bad?
If your cream of mushroom looks, smells or tastes off, trust your senses and get rid of it. Spoilage indicators could include a change in color, an unpleasant smell, or if you see mold or yeast like growth. If the canned soup develops a tinny taste or its texture is not as creamy or thick as it normally would be, these are signs it has gone bad. Finally, if the can of cream of mushroom is bulging or leaking, it's likely not safe to consume.
Tips for storing cream of mushroom to extend shelf life
• Always store opened cans of cream of mushroom soup in the fridge. The soup should be transferred to a non-metal, airtight container if you're not going to use the whole can at once.
• If you want to freeze cream of mushroom soup, it's a good idea to divide it into individually sized portions which will make defrosting easier.
• When defrosting, its best to thaw the soup in the fridge overnight. If you're in a hurry, you can use the defrost function on your microwave, but be sure to stir the soup often for even thawing.
• Avoid refreezing previously thawed soup to maintain best quality and safety.
