Expiration & Storage Tips
When does egg whites expire?
Unopened egg whites that are packaged can typically last about 2 weeks past the 'sell by' date printed on the package. Once they're opened, they should last about 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator. If the egg whites are already separated from the yolk, they can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. If you choose to freeze them, they can last for up to 12 months.
How do you tell if egg whites is bad?
First, there's the smell test. If your egg whites have a strong, sour aroma, then it's time to say goodbye. Second, visually inspect the egg whites. If they've become discolored or have developed a pink or brown tint, or you see signs of mold, these are clear indications of spoilage. Finally, if the texture of the egg whites seems slimy or unusually thick, that's another clue they're no longer good.
Tips for storing egg whites to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate egg whites, they should never be stored at room temperature.
• If you won’t be using them within 2 days, it’s better to freeze the egg whites.
• To freeze, pour individual egg whites into ice cube trays. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a sealable freezer bag and mark the bag with the date. Defrost only what you need when you need it.
• Never re-freeze thawed egg whites, as it could compromise the quality and increase the risk of foodborne illness.
• Always seal egg whites in airtight containers when storing them in the refrigerator or freezer to prevent them from absorbing odors of other foods.
