Expiration & Storage Tips
When does mixed berries expire?
Fresh mixed berries typically last for 3-7 days in the refrigerator in a sealed container. Pay attention to the 'best by' or 'use by' date on pre-packaged berries, though keep in mind they might go off a few days after this date while refrigerated. Frozen mixed berries, on the other hand, can last up to eight to twelve months in the freezer when properly sealed and stored at a consistent temperature. However, after this time, although safe to consume, the berries may start to lose their flavors and the texture might change.
How do you tell if mixed berries is bad?
You can tell mixed berries have gone bad if they're soft, moldy, discolored, or if they have a foul smell. Fresh berries should be plump, firm and bright in color. If the berries are slimy, this is a sign of bacteria setting in. Discard the entire package as the bacteria is likely spread throughout. For frozen berries, if you see signs of freezer burn including discoloration, ice crystals, or if the bag is deflated (indicating a loss of vacuum seal), it's best to not consume them.
Tips for storing mixed berries to extend shelf life
• Always store fresh mixed berries in the refrigerator. Before refrigerating, avoid washing them as moisture encourages mold growth.
• To freeze mixed berries, rinse them gently, pat them dry, spread them out on a baking tray, and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a zip-top bag or airtight container. Don't forget to label your bags with the date of freezing.
• Keep frozen mixed berries in the back of your freezer, not on the door, to maintain a consistent, cold temperature.
• If using dried mixed berries, keep them in a cool, dry place in a sealed container. They typically keep quality for about six to twelve months.
