Expiration & Storage Tips
When does asadero cheese expire?
When unopened, Asadero cheese can last 2-3 weeks past the sell-by date printed on the package. Once opened, the cheese should be consumed within 2 weeks for optimum freshness. However, wrapped well in cling film and placed in a sealed container, it can last for up to a month in the refrigerator. If your cheese is homemade, ensure that it's finished within 7-10 days. If frozen, Asadero cheese can last up to 3 months. When defrosting cheese, do it slowly in the refrigerator over the course of a day.
How do you tell if asadero cheese is bad?
When Asadero cheese has gone bad, you will notice a strong sour smell. It will also have a slimy texture. Spoiled cheese will also have unusually dark or light colored spots, which are a definite sign of mold. It's not safe to consume cheese when these signs are present. It's always a good rule of thumb: when in doubt, throw it out!
Tips for storing asadero cheese to extend shelf life
• Always keep the Asadero cheese refrigerated. Make sure the refrigerator temperature is below 40°F to prevent the growth of bacteria.
• When Asadero cheese is opened, wrap the leftovers well in cling film or wax paper, then put it in a sealable container. This will help avoid cross-contamination and preserve freshness.
• If you decide to freeze Asadero cheese, slice or grate it before freezing. This allows you to use small amounts as needed without having to defrost the entire block.
• Asadero cheese should be defrosted slowly in the refrigerator to maintain its texture and prevent it from becoming crumbly. Never defrost it at room temperature.
