Expiration & Storage Tips
When does star anise expire?
Unopened, star anise can last up to 3-4 years in a dry and cool pantry if stored correctly, becoming less potent over time rather than spoiling. Once opened, its shelf life decreases to approximately 1 year. Pay attention to best by dates on pre-packaged star anise; while still safe to consume beyond this date, it will gradually lose flavor. Whole star anise has a longer shelf life compared to powdered. If you freeze star anise, expect a shelf-life extension of 6 months; just make sure to tightly seal to prevent absorption of freezer smells.
How do you tell if star anise is bad?
Star anise is quite durable and won't spoil in a way that will make you ill. However, it may lose its potency and deliver less flavor over time. The best way to tell if your star anise has 'gone bad' is to give it a sniff. Fresh star anise has a strong, sweet and licorice-like aroma. If the smell is weak or non-existent, it's a clear sign that the spice has lost its pungency. Discoloration or presence of mold are rare but signal it's time for a replacement.
Tips for storing star anise to extend shelf life
• Store star anise, whole or ground, in a tightly sealed jar or container in a cool, dry, and dark place.
• Avoid storing near heat sources like stove, oven, or underneath a window with direct sunlight, as the heat will speed up the loss of flavor and aroma.
• If you choose to freeze star anise to extend its shelf-life, ensure it's properly sealed in a freezer bag or container to prevent its scent from permeating other food items.
• Buying star anise in its whole form can extend its shelf-life as it maintains flavor for longer than ground star anise. Ground as needed for the freshest flavor.
