Expiration & Storage Tips
When does granulated garlic expire?
Granulated garlic that is unopened and stored properly can last up to two to four years. This is also the average shelf life if you've bought a store-bought jar and it has an expiry date printed on it. However, once the container of granulated garlic has been opened, its quality will start to deteriorate after a year, although it can remain safe to consume indefinitely if stored properly. Unfortunately, freezing granulated garlic does not effectively maintain its flavor and texture and is not a common practice.
How do you tell if granulated garlic is bad?
Granulated garlic can clump together due to moisture exposure, however, this is not a sign that it has gone bad. To assess its freshness, check if it has developed a distinct, off smell or if its color has turned to a brown color. Another important indicator is the taste - if the garlic flavor has faded, your granulated garlic might be past its prime.
Tips for storing granulated garlic to extend shelf life
• Store in a cool, dry space, away from heat and direct sunlight.
• Keep it in a tightly sealed container to prevent the exposure to air and humidity.
• Once opened, consider transferring unused granulated garlic to a smaller, airtight container to reduce air exposure.
• Do regular quality checks for optimum flavor by giving it a quick sniff or a small taste. If the flavor or aroma has noticeably dulled, it's time for replacement.
