Expiration & Storage Tips
When does poppy seed expire?
Poppy seeds can actually have a varied shelf life depending on how they are stored. In a pantry, unopened and properly sealed, they can remain good for up to 4 years. Once opened, if stored correctly they can still last about 4-6 months beyond their 'best by' date printed on the package. If refrigerated or frozen in an airtight container, they can extend their freshness even further, lasting up to 6 months to a year.
How do you tell if poppy seed is bad?
Poppy seeds usually don't spoil, but they can go rancid due to their oil content. Your senses will guide you in determining their freshness. Sight is not a very reliable indicator for poppy seeds but smell can be quite telling. Fresh poppy seeds have a sweet, nutty smell. When they've gone bad, they might have a sour or 'off' smell. Also, taste them; they should taste mildly sweet and nutty. If they taste bitter or 'off', it's best to discard them.
Tips for storing poppy seed to extend shelf life
• Store poppy seeds in a cool, dark, dry place away from any source of heat. A pantry is ideal.
• After opening, air is their biggest enemy, so make sure you seal the container properly or place the seeds in an airtight container.
• If you want to extend their shelf life further, refrigerate or freeze the seeds, again in airtight containers. Just remember to let the seeds reach room temperature before use, especially if you're using them in baking, so as not to affect the outcome of your recipe.
• Avoid buying in bulk unless you're using large quantities regularly. It's better to buy smaller quantities more often to ensure freshness.
