Expiration & Storage Tips
When does dried sage expire?
Dried sage can last up to 1-3 years if stored correctly, even after its 'best by' date on the packaging. Once the package is opened, dried sage maintains its best quality for about 1 year, but it can still be safe to use even after that as the drying process greatly extends its shelf life.
How do you tell if dried sage is bad?
Check your dried sage for signs of spoilage such as discoloration or mold. If it looks fine, smell it. The herb should have a strong, slightly peppery aroma. If it smells weak, musty, or has no smell at all, it has likely lost its flavor and should be replaced. Finally, you can crush a leaf and taste a small amount - if there's no flavor, it's time to get a fresh batch.
Tips for storing dried sage to extend shelf life
• Store dried sage in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark, and dry place.
• Avoid storing it close to heat sources (stove, oven) or in direct sunlight as these conditions can deteriorate the flavor and potency.
• Keep away from areas with high humidity like next to the dishwasher or sink, as moisture can lead to the growth of mold.
• Avoid shaking the container when taking some sage out, as this exposes the herb to more oxygen which can affect its quality.
• Consider vacuum sealing if you buy dried sage in bulk. This can greatly extend its shelf life by limiting exposure to air.
