Expiration & Storage Tips
When does fresh sage expire?
Unopened, fresh sage can last for about 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator, as long as it’s kept dry. Once refrigerated, it's best to use fresh sage within 10-14 days, but if kept well, it can last up to 4 weeks. If you choose to freeze it, fresh sage can extend its shelf life to up to a year. However, the flavor will change slightly with freezing.
How do you tell if fresh sage is bad?
You can tell fresh sage has gone bad if the leaves turn dark or the stems become soft and squishy. Another clear sign that something is wrong is if the leaves show signs of mold or if it gives off an unpleasant smell. Fresh sage should have vibrant green leaves and a strong, earthy scent. If any of these characteristics seem off, it's time to toss your sage.
Tips for storing fresh sage to extend shelf life
• Put fresh sage in a perforated plastic bag and store it in your crisper.
• If you want to freeze sage, blanch it first, then dry it and store in an air-tight container.
• Avoid washing fresh sage until right before you plan to use it to help prevent premature decay.
• To extend the freshness of sage, wrap it in a dry paper towel before putting it in a bag for refrigeration.
• Another method to prolong the life of fresh sage is to snip the bottoms of the stems, place them in a glass of water, and store it in the refrigerator. Ensure the leaves are not submerged in water.
• You can also dry out sage by hanging it upside down in a cool, dark place. Once dried, store in a tightly sealed jar, away from heat and light.
