Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rapeseed oil expire?
Unopened rapeseed oil can last anywhere from 1 to 2 years from the date it was pressed, as long as it's stored in cool conditions and out of direct sunlight. Once opened, it's ideal to use the oil within 12 months. The 'Best By' date on the packaging is another reliable indicator of its shelf life, but remember that this is about quality, not safety. Rapeseed oil does not typically freeze well and can become cloudy and thick, although the oil will return to its normal clarity and consistency at room temperature, without affecting its quality or shelf life.
How do you tell if rapeseed oil is bad?
Rotted rapeseed oil will have a rancid or sour smell that's quite distinct from its usual neutral or slightly nutty aroma. Its color might darken over time, and you may see sediment or cloudiness, especially if it has been exposed to heat. If it tastes sour or bitter, it's time to toss it out!
Tips for storing rapeseed oil to extend shelf life
• Always store your rapeseed oil in a cool, dark place
• If possible, use a container with a small opening to reduce exposure to oxygen
• Keep the cap tightly closed when not in use to prevent exposure to air and contaminants
• Avoid storing the oil near heat sources like the stove or oven. A pantry or cabinet away from direct sunlight is ideal
• Do not transfer the oil into clear glass or plastic containers as light can degrade the oil over time.
• Usage can be extended slightly by refrigerating it, but this may also cause it to turn thick and cloudy. Allow it to return to room temperature before use.
• To keep it fresh once opened, use the oil within a year. In other words, don't buy in bulk unless you're using it regularly!
