Expiration & Storage Tips
When does canola oil expire?
Unopened canola oil can typically last up to two years from the production date if stored in a cool, dark place. Once opened, the freshness of canola oil can be maintained for up to one year. As for homemade canola oil, its shelf life considerably reduces to about 4-6 months due to lack of commercial preservatives. Canola oil is not typically frozen, but if you do freeze it, that could extend its shelf life by up to two more years, though it might affect the oil's consistency.
How do you tell if canola oil is bad?
The best way to tell if canola oil is past its prime is through its smell and taste. A rancid oil will smell bitter, moldy, or metallic. In terms of taste, it would give off a unpleasant, pungent or 'off' flavor. It's important not to use rancid oil as it can bring an unwelcome taste to your dishes and potentially contain harmful compounds.
Tips for storing canola oil to extend shelf life
• Store canola oil away from heat and light. The pantry is the most ideal place.
• Use a properly sealed container for your canola oil to prevent exposure to air which can speed up the oxidation process.
• Be mindful not to use utensils that have traces of food in your oil to prevent contamination.
• Do not reuse oil that has been heated to its smoke point as it would have undergone chemical changes that not only affect its taste but also leads to production of harmful compounds.
