Expiration & Storage Tips
When does tiger prawn expire?
Fresh, uncooked tiger prawns usually expire within two days if refrigerated right after purchase. If left at room temperature, they should be consumed within a few hours. Frozen tiger prawns can last up to 8 months in the freezer. After cooked, they should be consumed within 3 days if kept in the fridge. It's good to note the date of purchase on the packet if you're planning to freeze them.
How do you tell if tiger prawn is bad?
The first sign of bad prawns is usually the smell. Fresh prawns should smell slightly salty, like the sea. If they start to smell strongly unpleasant or fishy, they have likely gone bad. The color can also indicate their freshness. Fresh raw prawns should be pinkish with a hint of a blue or green tint. If they've turned a different color, especially if they're grayish, or have spots or discolorations, it's time to toss them. Lastly, bad prawns may look slimy or have a softened texture.
Tips for storing tiger prawn to extend shelf life
• Keep raw tiger prawns refrigerated and pack them in ice if possible. The closer they are to 0°C (32°F) without freezing, the better.
• If you're planning to freeze them, do it as soon as possible after buying them. Place them in freezer-safe bags or containers. Try to press out as much air from the bag as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burn.
• If you have cooked prawns, let them cool before refrigerating. Store in a tightly-sealed container.
• When defrosting frozen prawns, do it in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature. This prevents the development of bacteria. Never refreeze thawed prawns.
