Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cooking spray expire?
Generally, a can of cooking spray can last up to two years if unopened and stored properly. Once opened, it should ideally be used within six months, as the quality may deteriorate. As for the date on the package, it usually refers to 'best before' and not an exact expiration date, so while the taste and quality might decrease, it could still be safe to use after the printed date. Freezing isn't recommended for oil-based aerosol products like cooking spray.
How do you tell if cooking spray is bad?
Telling if a cooking spray has gone bad isn't always straightforward. However, a few telltale signs indicate it's time to chuck it. If you spray it and the smell is off or unusually strong, or if the oil appears cloudy or has particles floating in it, then it's expired and not safe to use.
Tips for storing cooking spray to extend shelf life
• Store your cooking spray in a cool, dark and dry place out of direct sunlight. Heat and light can cause it to degrade faster.
• Try to use it within six months of opening for the best quality. Remember, the longer after opening, the lower its effectiveness and quality.
• Make sure to secure the cap tightly after use to prevent air exposure, which can cause oxidation of the oil.
• Don't store the spray near the stove, oven, or other heat sources to avoid any accidental ignition, as cooking spray is highly flammable.
