Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Crumb Cake expire?
Unopened, a store-bought crumb cake will usually stay fresh for about 1-2 days past the printed date if kept at room temperature. In the refrigerator, it can last up to 7 days past this date. Once opened, the cake needs to be consumed within 2-3 days if kept at room temperature, but can last up to 5 days if refrigerated. Homemade crumb cake typically lasts 2-3 days at room temperature, while in the fridge, it extends to about a week. If you place it in the freezer, it can last up to 2-3 months.
How do you tell if Crumb Cake is bad?
If your crumb cake has started to go bad, it will often have a stale smell or a noticeably dry texture. Mold is another sign that the cake is no longer good to eat. Mold might appear as fuzzy spots of blue, green or black. If you notice any changes in smell, texture or color, it's best to discard the cake.
Tips for storing Crumb Cake to extend shelf life
• Always store crumb cake in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight to prolong its shelf life.
• Wrap the crumb cake tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This will keep it moist and fresh longer. Or, you can store it in an airtight container.
• If you're storing for longer periods, freese slices of the cake instead of the whole cake. This way, you can defrost what is needed and the rest remains fresh. For defrosting spend a night in the refrigerator.
• When in the refrigerator keep it away from foods with strong odors, such as onions or garlic, as cakes can absorb odors.
