Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pepitas expire?
Pepitas, if unopened, can be stored in a cool, dark, dry location such as a pantry for up to 1 year past the printed package date. Once opened, pepitas should be used up within 3 months for maximum freshness, but they will still be safe to consume for up to 6 months. Storing them in the refrigerator can extend their shelf life for up to a year, and if frozen, pepitas can be kept for up to 2 years.
How do you tell if pepitas is bad?
Pepitas that have gone bad are usually easy to identify. They might develop a rancid or sour smell. The taste will also change; they'll lose their nutty flavor and instead taste bitter or off. Visually check the pepitas for any dark spots or mold - if either is present, it's a sure sign they've gone bad.
Tips for storing pepitas to extend shelf life
• Store pepitas in a cool, dark, dry place like a pantry or a cupboard away from the stove.
• Once the package is opened, transfer any leftovers to an airtight container to prevent them from getting stale.
• Consider refrigerating pepitas, particularly in warm climates. They can also be frozen to extend their shelf life.
• If you buy pepitas in bulk, consider dividing them into smaller, usable portions before storing. This way, you're only exposing a small portion to air each time you use them.
