Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pecans expire?
If you buy unopened pecans, they can be stored at room temperature in a cool, dark place for about 3 months. However, once you've opened them, try to use them within two weeks for optimal freshness. Pecans can last in the refrigerator for up to 6 months and even a year if you decide to freeze them.
How do you tell if pecans is bad?
Like other nuts, it's not usually visually obvious when pecans have gone bad. The primary way is to do a smell test: if they smell like paint or have an otherwise off or rancid odor, they're definitely gone bad. If you're unsure, taste a small piece — if it tastes sour or off, it's time to throw them away.
Tips for storing pecans to extend shelf life
• Store pecans in a cool, dark place if you plan to use them soon. They can go rancid quickly if stored in a warm, humid environment.
• If you buy in bulk or want to store pecans for more than a couple weeks, refrigeration is your best bet. Place them in an airtight container to prevent moisture and other food odors from affecting their taste.
• For longer-term storage, freeze the pecans in a sealed plastic bag. Make sure to remove as much air as possible from the bag before freezing.
• When you're ready to use frozen pecans, you can defrost them at room temperature or in the refrigerator. If you're cooking or baking with them, you can even add them to your recipe straight from the freezer — no thawing necessary!
