Expiration & Storage Tips
When does thai basil expire?
Thai basil typically lasts about a week once picked or purchased fresh at the store. If you store it in the fridge, unwashed and in a mildly damp paper towel, it can prolong its freshness for about 10-14 days. When frozen, Thai basil can retain its aroma and flavor for up to six months. Keep in mind though, freezing it will cause it to lose its crispness, thus it's best used in cooked dishes after being frozen.
How do you tell if thai basil is bad?
Check the leaves and stems of the Thai basil; if they're beginning to blacken or wilt, it's a sign that the herb is going bad. Also, Thai basil that's going bad will start to lose its iconic aromatic scent. In more advanced stages, the leaves might even develop mold, which is a surefire sign that it's time to toss it out.
Tips for storing thai basil to extend shelf life
• Keep the basil unwashed until you’re ready to use it. The moisture will expedite spoilage.
• Store the Thai basil in a loosely closed plastic bag with a slightly damp paper towel. This will help maintain the right level of humidity and prevent the leaves from wilting.
• To extend Thai basil’s shelf life significantly, you can freeze it. To freeze, wash and dry the leaves, then chop them and store in an airtight container.
• If you purchased Thai basil with roots attached, try placing them in a glass of water, just like cut flowers. This can extend their freshness and even encourage new growth.
• When freezing Thai basil, be mindful that the texture will change, making it better suited for cooked recipes rather than raw ones.
