Expiration & Storage Tips
When does honeycrisp apple expire?
Honeycrisp Apples, like most apples, are pretty durable in terms of expiration. If left unopened and on the counter, they can last about 1-2 weeks. However, if you keep them in the drawer of your refrigerator, they can remain fresh and edible for up to 3-4 weeks. Honeycrisp apples can also be frozen for 10-12 months to extend their longevity, but will need to be sliced and stored in a freezer bag with some lemon juice to prevent browning prior to freezing. Once frozen, let them defrost in the fridge or at room temperature before eating or cooking with them.
How do you tell if honeycrisp apple is bad?
Signs that your Honeycrisp Apple may have gone bad include a wrinkly skin that has lost its firmness, a drastic change in color to a deep yellow or brown, or an off smell that could resemble vinegar. The apple may also feel lightweight or hollow, as if the inside has shrunk or dried up. If you cut the apple open, look for brown or mushy spots in the flesh, which could indicate that the apple is rotten.
Tips for storing honeycrisp apple to extend shelf life
• Keep apples in a cool, dark place. If your kitchen is often warm, it's better to store your apples in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator.
• Leave the stem on the apple, as this can also help extend its freshness.
• Store apples separately from other fruits and vegetables. Apples emit ethylene gas, which can hasten the ripening of other produce.
• If freezing apples, slice first and sprinkle with lemon juice to prevent browning. Store in an airtight freezer bag.
