Expiration & Storage Tips
When does apple pie spice expire?
Apple pie spice can last between one and three years unopened depending on the freshness of the spices at the time of packaging. After opening, it's best used within six months to one year to maintain optimal flavor, however, it does not technically 'expire' or become unsafe to use. If homemade and properly stored in cool, dark place, apple pie spice can last about a year as well. Freezing this spice blend is not a common practice but if you do, it maintains good quality for about 4-5 years.
How do you tell if apple pie spice is bad?
Apple pie spice, like most dried spices, doesn't necessarily go 'bad' in the traditional sense. The biggest concern is potent flavor loss. To check if your apple pie spice is still good, take a small amount and rub it between your fingers then sniff it. If the aroma is weak and the flavor isn't robust when tasted, it's time to replace your spices. Color fading is also another sign to determine if it has lost its potency.
Tips for storing apple pie spice to extend shelf life
• always store apple pie spice in a cool, dark, and dry place. Exposure to heat, light, and moisture can degrade the quality faster.
• consider decanting large quantities of the spice blend into smaller, airtight containers that you can use frequently, while leaving the bulk in a darker, cooler area to extend its shelf life.
• avoid using damp spoons or fingers to pick up the spice blend to prevent introducing moisture.
• always check for any signs of color fading or weak aroma and flavor to determine if it's still fit for use.
• ideally, replace your opened apple pie spice every six months to one year.
