Expiration & Storage Tips
When does granny smith apple expire?
Unopened and stored at room temperature, granny smith apples usually stay fresh for about 1-2 weeks. In a refrigerator, they can last 1-2 months. The printed date on the packaging doesn't necessarily indicate the apple's freshness, so it's best to check the apple yourself. Once the apple has been cut open, it will begin to brown within 30 minutes to an hour. You can slow this process by refrigerating the cut apple or squeezing a little bit of lemon juice onto the cut side.
How do you tell if granny smith apple is bad?
You can tell a granny smith apple has gone bad if the skin has noticeable dark spots or bruises. If you cut into the apple, brown, mushy flesh also indicates the apple has gone bad. The apple may also smell sour or fermented.
Tips for storing granny smith apple to extend shelf life
• Store uncut granny smith apples in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. You can place them in a fruit bowl on the countertop.
• To extend their shelf life, store the apples in the refrigerator, preferably in the crisper drawer where the humidity is higher.
• If you've cut into the apple, protect it from turning brown by squeezing a bit of lemon juice onto the cut side.
• Do not wash the apples until right before you're ready to use them. Water can accelerate spoilage.
• Keep apples away from other fruits. Apples release ethylene gas which can cause other fruits to ripen and spoil faster.
