Expiration & Storage Tips
When does skirt steak expire?
When kept in the refrigerator, unopened skirt steak can last for 3 to 5 days past the sell-by date. If you've opened it but haven't cooked it yet, you should either cook it or freeze it within 3 to 5 days. If you've cooked it, it will last in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 days. If you choose to freeze your uncooked skirt steak, it can last up to 6 to 12 months. Cooked skirt steak, when frozen, can also last up to 2 to 6 months.
How do you tell if skirt steak is bad?
The first sign to look for is a change in color. Fresh skirt steak is a deep, rich red color. If the steak has turned a dull brown or grey, or if there are any green or black spots, it may be going bad. Additionally, if the steak has a slimy texture or an off smell (think overly sour, fishy or generally unpleasant), those are sure signs the meat is spoiled.
Tips for storing skirt steak to extend shelf life
• Always store your skirt steak in the coldest part of your fridge, usually at the back on a lower shelf.
• If freezing, seal the steak tightly in a freezer bag, squeezing out as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.
• For added protection, wrap the freezer bag in aluminum foil.
• If defrosting a frozen steak, do so in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature to minimize risk of bacterial growth.
• Consider investing in a vacuum sealer for longer-term storage in the freezer - this can extend the life of your frozen skirt steak significantly.
