Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pico de gallo expire?
Unopened, store-bought pico de gallo can last in the fridge for about a week past the 'use by' date printed on the package. But, once opened, it's best consumed within 3 to 4 days. Homemade pico de gallo has a shorter shelf-life and should ideally be eaten within 2 days. Even if you freeze your pico de gallo (which is not commonly done due to texture changes), it should be eaten within 2-3 months for the best flavor and texture.
How do you tell if pico de gallo is bad?
If you notice a dullness in the vibrant colors or if the texture becomes slimy, it's an indication that your pico de gallo is going bad. Also, a sour or off smell is a sure sign that it's time to toss it. Similarly, if you see any mold, discard the salsa immediately.
Tips for storing pico de gallo to extend shelf life
• Always keep pico de gallo refrigerated in an airtight container. This not only helps to preserve freshness but also prevents the pico de gallo from absorbing other odors in your fridge.
• Seal your container promptly after each use to limit oxidation.
• Consider storing homemade pico de gallo in individual servings, to avoid excessive exposure of the whole batch to air, thus prolonging its freshness.
• Avoid freezing pico de gallo if possible. The freezing and thawing process can muddle the textures and affect the freshness.
