Expiration & Storage Tips
When does malt vinegar expire?
Malt vinegar, like most vinegars, has an almost indefinite shelf life due to its acidic nature. In an unopened state, it can sit comfortably in your pantry for at least two years past its 'Best By' date on the bottle. Once opened, you can still keep your malt vinegar in the pantry for up to two years. Even if you forgot it in the back of the cupboard for longer than that, it’s unlikely to go bad, but its flavor might not be as strong.
How do you tell if malt vinegar is bad?
Unlikely as it is for malt vinegar to go bad, there are a few signs you can watch out for. If your vinegar develops an off smell, different from its usual pungent odor or if you spot any mold growing, it's time to toss it. Changes in color can also indicate that your vinegar may not be at its best. However, little bits floating or a cloudy appearance are common in vinegar and usually harmless.
Tips for storing malt vinegar to extend shelf life
• Keep the vinegar in a cool, dark place like a pantry to extend its shelf life. Avoid leaving it near heat sources like the stove or in direct sunlight.
• Always use a clean spoon when scooping the vinegar out to avoid introducing any bacteria in the container.
• Make sure to tightly seal the vinegar bottle after each use to prevent air from entering, this will help maintain its quality and flavor.
• If you intend to use your malt vinegar for longer periods, say more than 2 years, consider refrigerating it. This could help maintain its flavor for a longer time. Do note that refrigeration is not usually necessary for vinegar.
