Expiration & Storage Tips
When does white wine vinegar expire?
Unopened white wine vinegar can typically last for around two years from the date printed on the package, and can still be safe to consume even beyond this if properly stored. Once opened, white wine vinegar should retain its finest quality for up to six months. But even after this period, it can still be safe to use for over a year. Freezing is not a typical or necessary method of storage for white wine vinegar.
How do you tell if white wine vinegar is bad?
While white wine vinegar is a highly acidic product that slows bacterial growth, you can usually tell if it has gone bad or spoiled if you notice changes in its appearance, smell, or taste. Signs to look out for include a murky or cloudy appearance, a particularly strong sour smell that doesn't match the typical aroma, or an off taste that is too sharp, too sour, or unpleasantly harsh.
Tips for storing white wine vinegar to extend shelf life
• Keep the white wine vinegar in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
• Excessive heat or light can deteriorate the quality and flavor of the vinegar, so consider storing it in a pantry or kitchen cupboard that stays relatively cool.
• Always ensure the bottle cap or lid is tightly sealed after every use to prevent exposure to air and contaminants.
• Transfer any remaining vinegar to a smaller container if you find that the original bottle is more than half empty. Doing this reduces the quantity of air in contact with the vinegar, thus slowing down further oxidation and maintaining its quality.
• There's no need to refrigerate white wine vinegar, even after opening, as its high acidity makes it a self-preserving substance.
