Expiration & Storage Tips
When does lager beer expire?
Unopened lager beer usually lasts about 4-6 months past the printed date on the package when stored at room temperature, although it may last much longer if stored at an ideal temperature of about 50-55°F (10-13°C). Once opened, it's best to consume the beer within a day or two, as exposure to air can cause the beer to go flat and lose its flavor. Freezing beer is typically not recommended as it can ruin the flavor and potentially cause the container to burst.
How do you tell if lager beer is bad?
You can tell if lager beer has gone bad if it has an unusual or off-putting smell, taste, or appearance. Signs of bad beer include a sour, stale, or moldy smell; a flat, watery, or unusually bitter taste; or a cloudy or discolored appearance. Also, if the beer has been exposed to heat or light for an extended period of time, it may have developed a 'skunky' or off flavor.
Tips for storing lager beer to extend shelf life
• Store unopened lager beer in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A cellar or pantry is often a good choice.
• Keep the beer upright. This minimizes the amount of beer that comes into contact with the air in the bottle, helping to prevent oxidation.
• Once opened, it's best to consume the beer as soon as possible to enjoy its optimal flavor. If you need to store an opened bottle, reclosing it tightly and refrigerating it immediately can help it last a bit longer.
• Do not freeze beer, as it can ruin its flavors and potentially burst the container.
