Expiration & Storage Tips
When does sherry vinegar expire?
Unopened sherry vinegar can last indefinitely if kept in a cool, dark place and sealed properly. However, for the best flavor, it's recommended to use it within 2 years. Once opened, it will gradually lose its unique flavor over time. It should maintain top quality for about 2 years but can still be used for up to 5 years if stored correctly. Freezing sherry vinegar is not necessary or recommended as it will not extend its shelf life.
How do you tell if sherry vinegar is bad?
Most common visual signs of spoilage in sherry vinegar are a change in color, the presence of sediment or a 'mother' (a blob-like substance often formed during fermentation), and changes in smell. However, these aren't always indicative of spoilage, but rather natural ageing processes. A tasting test is typically the most reliable way to determine if it's gone off. If it has sprung an unholy smell or has an unpleasant taste, it's time to discard it.
Tips for storing sherry vinegar to extend shelf life
• Keep your sherry vinegar in a cool, dark place like your pantry or a cupboard. Direct light and heat will degrade its quality over time.
• Make sure the cap or cork is always tightly sealed when not in use. Exposure to air can also lead to a loss of flavor and 'flat' taste.
• Avoid using metal or reactive containers for storage as they can alter the vinegar’s flavor.
