Expiration & Storage Tips
When does sweet rice flour expire?
Unopened, sweet rice flour can last up to a year past the printed date on the package if stored in a cool, dry and dark pantry. Once opened, sweet rice flour is best used within six months to maintain quality, but it can still be used up to one year if stored properly. This flour can also be stored in the freezer indefinitely, but for best quality, use within two years of freezing.
How do you tell if sweet rice flour is bad?
Sweet rice flour should have a neutral smell and smooth texture. If it smells sour, rancid or stale, it's likely gone bad. Same goes if you see mould, signs of insects or if the flour has become clumpy. In these cases, it's best to discard the flour for safety reasons.
Tips for storing sweet rice flour to extend shelf life
• Store sweet rice flour in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, like your pantry. Do not expose the rice to heat, moisture or direct sunlight.
• Once opened, you may also store sweet rice flour in the freezer to extend its shelf life. This is especially useful if you don't plan on using the flour often.
• To use sweet rice flour from the freezer, let it come to room temperature first. This ensures that it does not clump together or affect the temperature of your other ingredients.
• If your sweet rice flour has been open for a while, consider sifting it before using to ensure that it hasn't formed any lumps.
