In a small skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil.
2
Add the diced sweet onion and sauté for 1-2 minutes, then add the minced garlic and sauté until soft and fragrant (about 3-4 minutes)
3
Pour in the marinara sauce, add the minced basil, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
4
Cook the pasta in salted water according to the package instructions for al dente texture. Drain and toss with a spoonful of the prepared marinara sauce.
5
Preheat the oven to 350F.
6
Make the white sauce: In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the unsalted butter.
7
Add the all-purpose flour to the melted butter and mix until a thick paste forms. Cook for 1-2 minutes, until golden and toasted.
8
Pour in the whole milk, stir, and cook while stirring continuously for 5-6 minutes, or until the sauce is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Turn off the heat and set aside.
9
Assemble your pasta dish: Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce in the bottom of a baking dish, add a few spoonfuls of white sauce, layer in the pasta, pour the rest of the marinara sauce over the pasta, and top with the remaining white sauce.
10
Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese and grated parmesan or pecorino cheese evenly over the top.
11
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is completely melted.
12
Remove from the oven, and serve immediately.
13
Optional: Top with extra fresh basil or red pepper flakes before serving.
