When does split peas expire?
Unopened split peas can last up to 2-3 years past the printed date on the package. This is due to their low moisture content. Once opened, a package of dry split peas will typically last for about 1 year in the pantry. If you have cooked the split peas, they need to be refrigerated and will stay good for about 5 days. If you want to extend the shelf life even further, you can freeze cooked split peas for up to 6-8 months.
How do you tell if split peas is bad?
Over time, you may notice a change in the texture and color of split peas. If they become very hard and appear darker than usual, that's a sign they are getting old.
