Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Beans and Rice expire?
When stored unopened and in a cool, dry pantry, dry beans and uncooked rice can last for a good 2-3 years past their printed expiry date. However, once opened, they should be used within 6 months. If you've cooked a hearty beans and rice dish, it must be refrigerated within two hours, and it will remain good for around 4-5 days. If you've stored it in the freezer, the cooked beans and rice can last up to six months, though the texture and flavor might alter beyond three months.
How do you tell if Beans and Rice is bad?
The signs of beans and rice going bad can be quite obvious. For dry beans and uncooked rice, look for any signs of pests, molds, or an unpleasant odor. If the color has changed drastically, it may have gone bad. Any visible insect infestation should make them unfit for consumption. Cooked beans and rice should be thrown away if they have been in the fridge for more than 5 days, or if they smell sour, look slimy, or have any signs of mold. If the dish has been frozen, but smells or tastes off after it has been thoroughly heated, it’s safer to discard it.
Tips for storing Beans and Rice to extend shelf life
• Keep unopened dry beans and uncooked rice in a cool, dry, and dark place - like a pantry or cupboard.
• Once opened, transfer the beans and rice to airtight containers.
• Cooked beans and rice must be cooled down quickly (within two hours) and refrigerated in shallow, airtight containers.
• When freezing, let the cooked beans and rice cool down completely before storing in a freezer-safe container or bag. Be sure to leave a little space for expansion.
• Use frozen beans and rice within three months for the best taste, even though it can be safe to consume for up to six months.
• When thawing frozen beans and rice, it’s best to defrost them in the refrigerator or use the defrost function of your microwave. After thawing, reheat them thoroughly before serving.
