Expiration & Storage Tips
When does dijon mustard expire?
Commercially packed dijon mustard often has a 'best by' date rather than a 'use by' date stamped on packaging. This date usually signifies peak freshness and flavor within one to two years. However, it can still be of good quality for a year past this mark, if remain unopened and kept in a cool, dry place. Once opened, a jar of dijon mustard can last safely for about 6 to 9 months in the fridge, as long as it was properly stored. The freezing is not recommended for dijon mustard as the condiment may lose its distinct texture and zing.
How do you tell if dijon mustard is bad?
Mustard is usually quite durable, but it will eventually go bad. There are some signs to look out for: a change in smell or taste, a less vibrant color, presence of mold, or a change in consistency. If you notice any of these conditions, it may be time to throw away your mustard.
Tips for storing dijon mustard to extend shelf life
• Always store your dijon mustard in a cool, dry location.
• Make sure the lid is tight after every use. This will cut off air exposure and bacterial growth.
• Always use a clean, dry spoon to scoop out the condiment to avoid contaminating it with bacteria or other food particles.
• For optimal quality, it's best to keep opened mustard in the refrigerator. It will maintain its flavor longer that way.
