Expiration & Storage Tips
When does shaoxing wine expire?
Shaoxing wine can last for several years if unopened, thanks to its low fermentation point that inhibits spoilage. The best before date printed on the package can serve as an approximate guide but it can still be used much after this date if stored properly. Once opened, it lasts about 6 months to 1 year if stored in a cool, dark place but can last even longer if refrigerated. Freezing is not commonly done, but it doesn't adversely affect the wine and can actually extend its shelf life.
How do you tell if shaoxing wine is bad?
Determine if Shaoxing wine is spoiled by checking its smell and appearance. If the aroma is off and noticeably different from the familiar wine scent or if it smells like vinegar, it might have turned bad. Additionally, if you see any mold or irregularities floating on the surface or a change in color, it's a clear sign that the wine has spoiled and should not be consumed.
Tips for storing shaoxing wine to extend shelf life
• Store Shaoxing wine in a cool, dark place away from heat and light, preferably in the refrigerator once opened.
• Always keep the bottle tightly sealed to avoid exposure to air which can reduce its quality over time.
• While not a common practice, Shaoxing wine can be frozen to extend its life. In that case, leave some room in the bottle for the liquid to expand when frozen and defrost in refrigerator when required.
• Avoid storing the wine in locations with fluctuating temperatures like near a stove or oven.
• Do not consume the wine if any signs of spoilage such as unusual smell or appearance are observed.
