Expiration & Storage Tips
When does balsamic vinaigrette expire?
Balsamic vinaigrette, when unopened, can last for up to 1-2 years after the printed date on the package if kept properly in a cool, dark place. Once opened, it should ideally be consumed within 2-3 months. For homemade balsamic vinaigrette, it will generally last up to 1 week in the refrigerator. Freezing is not recommended for balsamic vinaigrette due to the oil and vinegar separation during thawing.
How do you tell if balsamic vinaigrette is bad?
Knowing if your balsamic vinaigrette has gone bad isn't too difficult! Generally, you'll notice the dressing has become thicker, almost like a jelly or a solid. This signifies the oil and vinegar have completely separated and no longer emulate. The color may also darken over time. If you notice an off smell, like rancid oil or sourness, discard the vinaigrette immediately.
Tips for storing balsamic vinaigrette to extend shelf life
• Always seal your vinaigrette tightly after each use to prevent bacteria growth.
• For the prolonged shelf life, store the vinaigrette in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature and whisk/shake before use.
• Avoid cross-contamination by using clean utensils every time you dish out the vinaigrette.
• For homemade vinaigrette, keeping it in a glass container extends its shelf life because glass is less reactive than plastic.
• Try to use your opened vinaigrette within a month for the best flavor.
• Consider making small batches of homemade vinaigrette to ensure fresh servings.
