Expiration & Storage Tips
When does dark corn syrup expire?
Unopened, dark corn syrup can be stored indefinitely in a cool, dry environment – its sugars act as natural preservatives. However, for the best quality, try to use it within a couple of years from the manufacture date. Once opened, it’s best to consume it within 2 years. Though it won’t necessarily go bad in a health-risk sense, it may lose its viscosity and optimal flavor over time. Freezing isn't a common practice for dark corn syrup, and it also wouldn't improve its necessary viscosity and melting properties.
How do you tell if dark corn syrup is bad?
Dark corn syrup rarely spoils in a way that's harmful, thanks to its high sugar content. To check if your dark corn syrup has gone bad, look for any changes in color, texture, or smell. Fermentation can sometimes occur, which would cause a sour smell, mold growth or a change in color. If the syrup appears cloudy, clumpy or has mold, discard it immediately. If it smells sour or off, likewise, it is time to dispose of it.
Tips for storing dark corn syrup to extend shelf life
• Store dark corn syrup in a cool, dry area, such as a pantry or lower cabinet.
• Once opened, be sure to securely tighten the cap after each use. This keeps unwanted bacteria and microbes out.
• Optimal storage temperature for dark corn syrup is around 70°F or 21°C.
• Avoid using or storing dark corn syrup near contaminants like cleaning fluids, soaps or pungent food items that could alter its flavor.
