Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pancake syrup expire?
Unopened pancake syrup can last indefinitely in the pantry as long as it's stored in a cool, dry place. Once opened, syrup should be stored in the refrigerator and typically lasts for about one year. If you've frozen the syrup, it can last indefinitely, although it may lose its quality over time. Homemade syrups have a shorter lifespan, usually lasting about 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
How do you tell if pancake syrup is bad?
If syrup is left out, it may develop mold. To identify bad syrup, check for any changes in color or appearance, a strange or sour smell, or the presence of mold, especially on the surface of the liquid or around the rim of the bottle. If any of these signs are present, it's best to throw the syrup out.
Tips for storing pancake syrup to extend shelf life
• Always keep syrup in a cool, dry place if it's unopened.
• Once opened, store your syrup in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life.
• Make sure the cap is tightly sealed to prevent the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms.
• If you have a lot of syrup, consider freezing it in small batches. Just make sure to leave some space at the top of the container as the syrup will expand when frozen.
• Quality can decline over time, so it's best to consume it within one year for the best flavor.
• For homemade syrups, keep in the refrigerator and consume within two weeks.
