Expiration & Storage Tips
When does malt syrup expire?
Unopened malt syrup generally has a shelf-life of up to two years when stored in a cool, dry, and dark location. Once opened, it lasts for about a year in the pantry and can last longer when kept in the refrigerator where the cooler temperature slows down the rate of spoilage. As with other products, always check the expiration date on the package to guide you.
How do you tell if malt syrup is bad?
Malt syrup going bad is relatively rare due to its high sugar content. However, if it happens, the syrup may lose its consistency becoming either too thick or thin and will also lose its typical sweet aroma and flavor. In some severe case, mold may start to form. If you notice any of these signs, discard the syrup right away.
Tips for storing malt syrup to extend shelf life
• Store malt syrup in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The pantry should be fine unless you live in a hot climate, in which case the refrigerator might be a better option.
• Always ensure the container cap is securely tightened after use to prevent contamination with bacteria and other substances.
• Avoid using wet utensils to scoop out the syrup as moisture can encourage bacterial growth.
• Consider dividing the syrup into smaller containers if you use it sparingly. This way, you reduce the entire batch's exposure to air every time you open a container.
