Expiration & Storage Tips
When does avocado oil expire?
Unopened bottles of avocado oil can last up to a year and sometimes even longer beyond the printed expiration date. Once opened, avocado oil maintains optimum freshness for about six months if stored properly. However, it can still be used for up to a year, just the quality might decrease after six months. Avocado oil can be frozen to extend shelf life, although it might change the consistency slightly. Once it has been thawed, it should be used within a few days.
How do you tell if avocado oil is bad?
It should feel silky and smooth, not tacky or sticky. In terms of smell, fresh avocado oil has a mild, nutty aroma with a hint of avocados. If the oil has a rancid, sour or otherwise off-putting smell, it's a sign it's gone bad. Also, if the oil develops a dark, murky appearance or has visible signs of mold or discoloration, it's time to toss it.
Tips for storing avocado oil to extend shelf life
• Keep the oil tightly capped when not in use
• Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat. The pantry or a kitchen cupboard (not over the stove!) are excellent choices.
• Opt for small bottles if you're not using it regularly, as it stays fresher when it's in a bottle that's nearly full.
• If you've opted to freeze your oil, take out only what you need and thaw it in the refrigerator, then return the rest to the freezer as soon as possible.
