Expiration & Storage Tips
When does taco shell expire?
Taco shells can typically last for 2-4 weeks past the 'best by' date printed on the package when stored in a cool, dry pantry unopened. Once opened, however, their shelf life reduces to about 7-10 days. If you decide to freeze the taco shells, they can last up to 8 months.
How do you tell if taco shell is bad?
Taco shells are fairly easy to evaluate for freshness. Examine the shells visually - if you see any signs of mold or discoloration, it's time to throw them out. Smell the shells as well - if there is a sour, off-putting, or unfamiliar odor, it's likely they've gone bad. Lastly, a stale or excessively crunchy texture can indicate that the shells are past their prime.
Tips for storing taco shell to extend shelf life
• Keep the taco shells in their original packaging until you're ready to use them, as this can help protect them from air exposure and moisture.
• Once opened, it's best to transfer the remaining taco shells to an airtight container or resealable plastic bag to keep them fresh.
• Store your taco shells in a cabinet or pantry that's away from heat and moisture sources, like your stove, dishwasher, or sink.
• Freezing taco shells can extend their life considerably. To avoid freezer burn, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before placing inside a freezer-safe bag. When you're ready to eat the frozen shells, simply allow them to thaw at room temperature before reheating.
